Drift Away

Drift Away

Some days, the only way to keep myself sane is to plug into a great song and play it on repeat until I can think once more. Drift Away has always been a song that heals me. Dobie Gray told me let the music in to help me to feel my feelings, good and bad, and let them go. It could be my superpower. Just drift away into the music and all could be okay. The song was also one of the inspirations behind Lyrical Sunshine. It embodies the kind of good energy I wanted to celebrate.

Written by Mentor Williams in 1970, two other artists released versions of the song before it was given to soul singer Dobie Gray in 1973 and became a surprise international hit. It has since become one of the most covered songs ever, with over 50 versions recorded. That shows me that it's message rings true to so many people.

And when my mind is free
You know a melody can move me
And when I'm feelin' blue
The guitar's comin' through to soothe me

We should believe in the song of rhythm, rhyme and harmony. It helps us along, makes us strong. So next time you are struggling to feel anything, put on your headphones and play Drift Away or your favorite healing song and let go.

Gimme the beat, boys and free my soul, I wanna get lost in your rock and roll and drift away.

Look to the sun and sing along,

Lindsey
