Give a Little Bit

Give a Little Bit
Give a little bit
Give a little bit of your love to meI'll give a little bitI'll give a little bit of my love to youThere's so much that we need to shareSo send a smile and show you care

Amongst this week's tumultuous and sad news items was that we lost Rick Davies, founder, vocalist and keyboardist of the rock band Supertramp, at 77 years old. He also co-wrote the song "Give a Little Bit" with bandmate Roger Hodgson. To me, that song is an anthem to love, empathy and kindness. It's a song we need to be singing to one another right now.

Written by Hodgson years earlier, it was recorded and released in 1977 as a single off their album Even in the Quietest Moments. The Goo Goo Dolls also recorded a cover of the song in 2004. I recently read that it was inspired by The Beatles, "All You Need is Love". Is there any more to say? All you need is love, Love.

Hodgson said in a 2023 interview "Even at an unwizened young age...I saw that the world needed love. I believed in love – it was always for love – and I just felt that was the most important thing in life. This song has really taken on a life of its own, and I think it’s even more relevant today than when I wrote it. Because we really are needing to value love in a much deeper way, and also we’re needing to care."

He's bloody well right. We need to give a little bit of our love, our life and our time to one another. It's the only way through. This week has been too heavy. All of us are hurting in many ways, there's no denying it or brushing it aside. We really need to find a way together. I'm going to try to help through songs and lyrics. I hope I can remind you that you can still choose to love each other. Will you send a smile and show you care?

Live in the Sun Not the Shade,

Lindsey
