Thank you for being a friend
Traveled down a road and back again
Your heart is true
You're a pal and a confidant

And if you threw a party
Invited everyone you knew
You would see the biggest gift would be from me
And the card attached would say...

Most of us know Thank You for Being a Friend as the theme song from The Golden Girls. I know I can sing every word without even thinking about it. It's one of those songs that instantly transports me back to Saturday nights, four remarkable women around a kitchen table, and somehow always cheesecake. It makes me smile every time I hear it.

A while back, I decided to listen to Andrew Gold's original version, released in 1978 on his album All This and Heaven Too. I found myself paying attention to the lyrics in a way I never had before. Stripped away from the television show, it's simply a beautiful song about friendship, gratitude, and letting the people you love know just how much they mean to you. It reminded me that saying "thank you" is one of the kindest things we can do, and just as importantly, it reminded me to be the kind of friend worthy of hearing those words in return.

As I've gotten older, friendships have become even more meaningful to me. Some of my friends have been part of my life for decades, while others have wandered into my world more recently. Every one of them has shaped me in some way. They've celebrated life's happiest moments with me, carried me through some difficult ones, made me laugh until I cried, and reminded me that life is always a little lighter when you don't have to walk through it alone.

Like so many of us, I get caught up in everyday life. The weeks go by faster than I'd like, and before I know it, I've been meaning to call someone for months. Social media makes it easy to keep up with everyone's lives, but  it isn't really how I want to connect with the people I love. I'd much rather sit across from a friend over coffee, take a long walk together, or spend an afternoon talking about absolutely everything and absolutely nothing. Those are the moments I remember most.

One of my favorite lines in the song has always been:

I'm not ashamed to say
I hope it always will stay this way
My hat is off
Won't you stand up and take a bow?

Those lyrics remind me that gratitude shouldn't be reserved for birthdays, weddings, or special occasions. Sometimes the people who have quietly stood beside us for years deserve to hear how much they matter on an ordinary Tuesday.

So today I'm thinking about my friends, both near and far, old and new, silver and gold. If you're one of those people reading this, thank you. Thank you for your kindness, your encouragement, your laughter, your honesty, and for simply being part of my life. I hope I've told you that enough, but if I haven't, I'm telling you now.

And if this post brings someone to mind, maybe it's a little nudge to reach out. Send the text. Make the phone call. Meet for lunch. Tell them what they mean to you. Life has a way of getting busy, but friendships are one of the greatest gifts we'll ever receive. They deserve to be celebrated while we still have the chance.

Look to the sun and sing along,

Lindsey
